Clear your kitchen of non-safe foods

In order to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination give away or throw away gluten laden foods. This is a great opportunity to donate to the local food bank.

Pantry: While a well-stocked pantry is key to eating gluten-free, below is a list of common baking supplies that may contain gluten:

  • Baking Powder: Some brands of baking powder may contain gluten, so check the label.
  • Baking Mixes: Pre-made baking mixes for bread, cakes, cookies, muffins, pancakes, and waffles often contain gluten.
  • Chocolate Chips: Some chocolate chips may contain gluten or be processed in facilities that handle gluten. Look for gluten-free certification on the package.
  • Flavorings and Extracts: Some flavorings and extracts, like vanilla, may contain gluten.
  • Flour: wheat, semolina, spelt, durum, emmer, einkorn and rye, which is also referred to as pumpernickel.
  • Oats: While oats themselves are gluten-free, they are often processed in facilities that handle gluten, leading to cross-contamination. Keep certified gluten-free oats as a pantry staple.
  • Gluten Products: Bread, pasta, pre-packaged crackers and cookies should be thrown away or donated. Don’t forget to read the labels on chips too!

Refrigerator: Check each item stored in your refrigerator. Discard opened condiments including peanut butter and jelly and replace to avoid cross-contamination. Don’t forget to check the labels on flavored creamers.

Appliances: replace your toaster, coffee makers/grinders (especially if you use gourmet flavored coffees as they can contain gluten. Thoroughly clean the blender, colanders, and waffle irons. If you are sharing a kitchen with a gluten family member you will want to have a separate toaster, designated for gluten-free.

Clean Your Kitchen:

Maintaining a clean kitchen is essential for a gluten-free lifestyle. Start at the top and work your way down so any dust or crumbs will fall to the floor. Use separate sponges and cloths for gluten-free and gluten-containing areas to avoid cross-contamination.

For ceilings, ceiling fans, light fixtures, and vents: Wipe with a damp rag and rinse between uses.

For windows: Remove the curtains for washing and clean the windows as well.

For drawers and cabinets: Begin by emptying all contents, followed by vacuuming and wiping down with a natural cleaner that is gluten-free and chemical-free. Vinegar is an effective degreaser and cleaner, which also leaves your kitchen smelling fresh. Pay special attention to the handles and cabinet door fronts. Don’t forget to clean the tops of the cupboards and any ornamental pieces.

Did you know?

Dust from gluten-containing flours can remain airborne for several hours.

For countertops: thoroughly clean countertops, cutting boards, and small appliances such as blenders and coffee pots, to eliminate any traces of gluten.

For eating and cooking utensils: Wash them in the dishwasher or by hand using hot soapy water.

For the microwave: Wash the inside out thoroughly and wipe the outside. Vinegar is great for cleaning the inside. Mix 2 tablespoons of vinegar into a glass measuring cup filled with one cup of water. Place cup in the microwave and heat it on high for 5 minutes. After the microwave stops, leave the door closed for 2-3 minutes. Carefully remove the cup (it will be hot) and use a sponge or cleaning cloth to wipe down the inside. If your microwave has a removable turntable, take it out and wash with warm, soapy water.

For cleaning the stove: Take out the drip pans and scrub them in hot, soapy water. Clean the stove surface from top to bottom. Don’t forget to vacuum the inside of the stove drawer as well.

For oven cleaning: Liberally scatter baking soda across the oven’s bottom and moisten with water. Using a sponge or damp cloth, rub in circles to form a paste. Allow it to sit while you clean the oven’s top and sides. Afterwards, rinse the cloth and remove the paste. If the oven is particularly dirty, leave the paste on overnight. For stubborn stains, employ a Brillo pad.

Refrigerator cleaning: First, remove all items from the refrigerator. Then, in a spray bottle, combine one part water with three parts vinegar. Liberally spray the interior walls and wipe them clean. For the refrigerator racks and drawers, use hot soapy water. Remember to clean the racks on the inside of the doors as well. Finally, dry everything with a clean cloth. Place gluten-free items on the highest shelf to prevent cross-contamination.
