Finding Joy in Homemaking

As homemakers, there are days when the work can feel… well, a little mundane.
If you’ve ever felt stuck or worn down—what some might call homemaker burnout—you’re not alone.
But even in those moments, it’s possible to rediscover a quiet joy in homemaking.

The laundry piles up.
The dishes are waiting.
Beds are made, only to be slept in again a few hours later.
And somewhere in the middle of it all, you might find yourself wondering…

Does what I do really matter?

If you’ve ever felt that way, you’re not alone.

A Life of Homemaking

I’ve been a homemaker for 44 years—27 of those full-time.

Before that, I served in the military and worked in the corporate world while raising my son as a single mom. I’ve experienced different kinds of work over the years, and I can honestly say this:

There is no work more meaningful to me than caring for my home and my family.

But that doesn’t mean I’ve never found myself in a rut.

When Homemaking Feels Discouraging

There were seasons when loving my home didn’t come easily.

As a single mom, I lived in places that weren’t always very nice. And later, as a married homemaker, I spent nearly ten years in a home where construction seemed to be ongoing… until it simply stopped.

It never quite felt finished.

And when your home doesn’t feel complete, it can be hard to feel motivated to care for it.

Can you relate?

Love Your Home

Somewhere along the way, I realized something important:

You don’t have to wait for everything to be perfect to create beauty.

Even now, the outside of our home is still a work in progress. But I’ve learned to find simple ways to make it feel welcoming:

  • A few plants on the porch
  • A pretty rug by the door
  • Small touches that bring a bit of joy

And most importantly…

A heart of gratitude for what we’ve been given.

Overcoming Homemaker Burnout (A Gentle Shift in Perspective)

These days, as I go about my daily chores—folding laundry, washing dishes, straightening up—I often find my thoughts turning to Scripture.

Proverbs 31:27 gives us a beautiful picture of a woman who:

“watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness.”

It’s not flashy work. It’s steady. Faithful. Intentional.

And then there’s Colossians 3:23–24:

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”

Even the smallest, most ordinary tasks take on new meaning when we remember who we’re truly serving.

1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us:

“Whatever you do… do it all for the glory of God.”

That changes everything.

Homemaking Is a Ministry

Homemaking isn’t just a list of chores to check off.

It’s a ministry.

It’s creating a place of peace.
It’s nurturing the people within your walls.
It’s shaping a home—and in many ways, helping shape the next generation.

And that is no small thing.

A Gentle Encouragement for Today

If you’re feeling stuck or discouraged in your homemaking…

Take a deep breath.

Look around your home—not for what’s unfinished—but for what you can bless today.

Start small.

Add a touch of beauty.

Turn your heart toward gratitude.

And remember:

What you do matters more than you think.
